Lean Product Development (LPD)

beaker

LPD is designed to accelerate the product development process by taking out the 9 wastes commonly found in PD and by changing the way the PD process works. It’s no longer as simple as “stages & gates”.

Lean Product Development (LPD) is the application of the 5 Lean Principles to Product Development Processes:

1. Define Value

2. Map the Flow of Value

3. Achieve Continuous Flow

4. Pull

5. Seek Perfection

What’s different about the application is that Product Development processes are not linear and they’re more about the flow of information than the flow of materials.

There are also 5 key elements in LPD:

  1. Set-Based Concurrent Engineering
  2. A Core Team of Responsible Experts
  3. Integrating Events that Pull the Work Forward
  4. Managers & Supervisors as Coaches
  5. Value Stream Leadership for PD

The results of Lean Product Development include:

a) shorter lead time from concept à launch à market

b) better quality (fewer engineering changes after launch)

c) lower program costs

d) improved quality of worklife for the PD team members & their managers.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Map the Current State of your Product Development Process
  2. Identify the 9 Kinds of Waste in Product Development, specifically where each one is occurring in your Current State VS Map.
  3. Create a Future State Value Stream Map for Product Development Using the Lean Principles
  4. Create an Implementation Plan to Achieve Your Future State VS Map for Product Development
  5. Identify a Value Stream Leader for your LPD process.
  6. Select a Pilot Program to apply LPD to.
  7. Establish Baseline Metrics for your Current State Product Development Process

Who Should Attend:

a) Research & Product Development Managers & Directors

b) Program Managers

c) Engineering Managers

d) Engineers & Product Development Specialists

e) Business Development Managers
