TWI Training Within Industry is a set of 3 basic programs, Job Relations, Job Instruction, and Job Methods, which are often referred to as “The Roots of Lean.”
TWI was developed in the US by the War Department in 1942 to help new supervisors rapidly get up to speed as trainers (Job Instruction), improvers (Job Methods), and employee relations builders (Job Relations). TWI was very successfully used in WWII, but, after the war, was allowed to go dormant in the US. Japan however picked it up in 1950, with General MacArthur’s staff promoting it as a way to help Japan recover, and has been using it steadily since that time. Toyota is one of the primary benefactors, and continues to be very active in use of TWI.
JCM Work Designs/Lean Sigma Team has extensive experience bringing TWI to it’s clients since 2002. Check out the descriptions of TWI Job Instructions, Job Methods, and Job Relations under the “Categories” listing.
